Territorial Elementary news article – 8/12/11

Playgrounds are an essential part of any school and every community.  Children spend many hours of their school experience occupying themselves with what the playground has to offer.  Beyond the classroom, the climate of the school as a whole is set by what happens on the playground.  Unresolved playground conflicts soon spill over into the classroom.  Territorial Elementary School will be undergoing a playground project this year called Peaceful Playgrounds.  A project that was begun by PTA is being brought to fruition by Mikkel Turley as an Eagle Scout Project to help create the peaceful playground.

Territorial Elementary School’s playground will reveal brightly painted concentric circles, rectangles, and various colored shapes that are spaced and painted on the blacktop and concrete.  In addition to the traditional games like Hopscotch and Four Square, there will be an Alphabet Grid, Number Grid, Multi-Use Circle, Scattered Circles, Skipping Track to name a few.  Teachers are teaching students a consistent set of rules as well as skills to solve conflicts.  In addition to the games there will be 2 maps painted on concrete, one United States map on the primary playground, and the world map on the upper elementary playground.
